Toll Road Speed Limit

I guy I work with said he got on a tollway of some sort and received a ticket from a automatic booth when he entered and when he exited the tollway about 30 minutes later, they wrote him a speeding ticket based on the time he entered and the distance traveled. Am I being fed a line of bull here? Seems pretty crappy if true.

  • Yes, this is one of the new ways of getting money.
Think about what they want to here in Washington. They want you to plug advise into OBD point in your vehicles and charge 1.5 cents per mile.
  • I grew up in NJ and this was the case 49 years ago when I learned how to drive. It has always been common knowledge. We used to get on the TP and drive as fast as we could and then stop for a lunch break at a rest stop restaurant before exiting.
  • Never got a ticket but over 40 years ago the toll taker when you got off would calculate your speed and "strongly" suggested that you slow down. On the Mass. Pike.

Well I was doing over a 100, as a teenager, in a hot Camaro, in the middle of the night with no traffic.
  • I would put more credence in the Snopes report than Drudge which only refers to speeding in toll plazas and does not talk about actual speeding "tickets."
  • The old DFW Turnpike used to be that way many many years ago. Free for many years now. But all the other many toll roads here now no longer have toll booths. They read your electronic toll tag if you have one, or photo your license plate and send an invoice if you don't. But no speeding tickets. I would almost welcome it as many seem to view them as raceways routinely running 15-20 over the limit. Minimal enforcement.
  • The local morning news did a story on if this morning but it was tied to the EZ-Pass system. I would guess getting hit thru an electronic pass is more of a sure thing than writing a ticket and expecting a motorist from out of state to pay the fine. Just as bad as speed and read light cameras.

First time is a fine, second or don't pay the fine they lock down your EZ-Pass.
  • It's true. Any way they can to make money. I remember back in 95, some statement on toll ticket about time, on Kansas toll section, of Interstate.
It is illegal. They are not a police agency.
It is illegal anyway but Citizens in Florida and elsewhere are used to being fined, tolled, and paying fees, and taxes that are far beyond normal, in America.
All that money, in Florida just from Tourist fines, tolls and everything else should gold plate the entire state. Where does it go?
