I've only used Blue Ox telescoping type, but they all work the same way. Blue Ox suggests hooking up then pulling the motorhome forward, stopping to check that both tow bar arms lock.
I found it easier to simply back up the toad until both arms lock. If only one locks, simply put a bungee on that arm lock to hold it disengaged, pull the toad forward, remove the bungee, and try again with a slight steering adjustment.
