Same as all the other posts but add one step. I always make sure the tow bar "locks" both arms before pulling away. As far as brake lights, I put on the flashers and if they work properly, the brake lights are working.
I have aa Blue Ox Aventa and hook up by myself all the time. Many times after hooking up the tow bar, I leave the car in neutral if I am on flat ground and simply push the car back until the bars lock. You will soon learn which way to turn the wheel so the bar that seems shortest will lock when the other does. It does take practice but the process is simple so you can do it by yourself.
