DUCTAPE: My Ranger is also a 4WD (with automatic) and apparently it makes no difference if I use my chip key or non-chip key to, as you say, go thru the "procedure" to get the transfer case in "neutral" (to tow). I had to buy a $400 installed "Transfer Case Neutral Switch Kit"...only available from Ford in order to tow 4-down. You too?
JOHNOo2; The battery on a HHR should never go down if you pull that 2AMP fuse before towing. So, the battery might go down for other reasons...including being VERY weak to begin with. And I hope that never happens to anyone...seeing the battery is in the rear of the car, Almost under the spare (donut) tire. Otherwise the HHR is a excellent "toad".
