It has been my experience that the closer to level the better. If an out of level situation is in existence my preference would be for the bar to run slightly down toward the motorhome. My thinking for this opinion is simply that when the motorhome is braked the nose will go down and the rear of the motorhome will rise thereby offsetting the slight downslope.
Another point I have pondered and have no hard facts to support is the forces placed on a receiver tube of a hitch when using a drop or lift hitch bar. This seems to cause adverse torsional force placed on the hitch which could easily exceed the design strength of the hitch and cause a failure of the welds or the base metals of the hitch. Someone smarter than me will have to apply some engineering principle to that one to add anything c;ose to fact to my musings. I can only say that the possibility exists in my mind.
