Towing a 6400lb toyhauler with my MH

I have a 2002 Winnebago 32V with the F53 chassis and the ford v-10 engine. Max towing weight is 5000# but I want to tow my 6400# toyhauler. I know I would have to get a 10,000# receiver installed but what else should I do?

  • If it does not have trac bars, that is one thing I would ad. My coach is supposed to be limited towing of 2000 lbs. I tow 4600 lbs. Up to 3100 lbs towing, it was fine, but towing the heavier Jeep gave it some really bad understeer. I put a trac bar in the rear, which made a huge difference. When you start pushing weight limits, handling tends to go out the window. Giving more precise control from a trac bar made all the difference.

I have a buddy that bought a 40' park model and, to save $, decided to tow it about a hundred miles to his seasonal campsite using his F150 PU. I told him he was crazy to try but away he went. he made it but said that stopping was "really interesting". the point is...maybe you'll be able to propel the toy hauler but stopping, steering, etc. might be "really interesting".
    electric trailer brakes
  • Here we go again. His 2002 F53 GCWR is 26,000 pounds. To tow a 6400 pound trailer, and stay under that, means that the motorhome would have to be under 19,600 pounds. Probably realistic for a 32' single slide RV.

At least he's asking and ready to make some modifications. Most folks don't even think about it, or even weigh their trailers, and tow WAY over capacity.

  • Anybody see the old movie, Grapes of Rath ?.
That ol truck was loaded down in the movie traveling from Ok to Cali, plus all the family hanging all off of it.
Probably loaded 10 times more than it should have been, but they made the trip with it.

That toy hauler is heavy just by itself & then all the stuff you'll probably want to load in it, would put a serious strain on the F53 drive train, but you could maybe get one of those trailer toads to take the weight off the m/h chassis & maybe do it. Would be one heck of a load for the V10 & trans to pull.

Now if you had one of those big three axle DPs like Dennis has got, if it was me, I wouldnt have even asked the question, just hook it up & go.

simply changing out the hitch is probably not enough. you may need to make structural changes to your MH but even that doesn't take into account the ability of the engine and tranny to pull that load. i'm not smart enough to know the precise answer but I am smart enough to seek out the opinion of a professional that has no interest in the answer. i'd make a call to Winnebago customer service and see what the engineers there have to say. I would not seek the advice of someone who wants to sell me a Class IV hitch.
  • That's some scary thinking, for sure....there's more to towing than simply beefing up the hitch...:E...whatever you do to the hitch, you'll have the tail wagging the dog....either buy a coach that will tow what you want or scale down your toyhauler....there's a reason your current coach has a 5k MAX...and it's not simply because they wanted to go cheaper on the hitch.....Dennis
