Towing behind a MH

We are new to the RV world. My wife and I just bought a 44ft MH and are trying to figure out best way to tow a jeep and 2 motorcycles behind the MH. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

  • Or get a truck that can carry the bikes and sell the Jeep.

At 44' you are already site limited let alone finding a larger pull through for what 75' or so vs unhitching, storing and hitching the trailer. Short visits are more of a concern while more extended stays not so much.

Also be aware that some states have length restrictions that you will exceed. You may not get stopped but make sure the Jeep can tow the trailer with the bikes.

I'd go with a box trailer with these thoughts.

Every thing gets protected, and the trailer becomes a storage place for the bikes.

the act of backing a big trailer with a motorhome is an art form. So your jeep must be able to tow it too.

Most likely the case, until one gets some practice and did see an old Prevost last week, quickly backing into a site and like he could do it in his sleep. Had a Dodge Charger inside, so not something that you'd tow a big trailer with.
There were a lot of these enclosed trailers in this resort and did see some of them open with little workshops inside and one even had a fridge.

Google Tandem Tow Dolly. Maybe it will work for you, it's what we use.

Just a thought, can a Jeep be dolly towed? Could it damage the 4WD?
That was my fist thought, I don't think you can tow the Jeep, at least Wrangler, with 2 down very far. There are some warnings in the manual about emergency tow. I think you would be better with a trailer.

Large enclosed trailer with a small workshop in front or a simpler setup would be to pull a 2014 and up Ford F150 4x4, four down and put the bikes in the bed.
By the way, there's supposed to be a Wrangler PU coming out in a couple of years, but have no idea on how long the bed will be.

  • I like the idea of a car hauler trailer and just load everything up on to 1 trailer. Then you'll avoid tow bars and the rest of the issues with that. Everything will just be on a trailer and you can back down the jeep on the ramps.
  • A trailer would seem to be the only reasonable choice. While an open trailer would work and possibly an enclosed on also, without going to a stacker trailer you would be getting into a pretty long combination. Even though police rarely seem to pay a lot of attention to motorhome combos in general, you would have a hard time staying under the 65 ft. overall length rules which are federally mandated.

A stacker trailer might be your best bet. I've seen several folks using those when hauling a bunch of toys and they seemed pleased although they admit that campgrounds are an issue that require some pre-planning.
