Hi, my motor-home has a 10,000 lb tow hitch. I want to know do's and don'ts of towing an enclosed trailer with a car and Harley inside.
The capacity of the hitch doesn't necessarily indicate what you can tow. That is going to be determined by the Combined Gross Vehicle Weight rating of CGVWR. You should have a decal in your motorhome that tells you what that is. That number will be the total weight you can have when you add in your motorhome, all it's cargo and fluids, plus the weight of the trailer and it's contents. You aren't supposed to exceed that number. Does that mean the motorhome won't move if you're a few pounds over? No it doesn't, but I'd probably try and stay under that number if it were me.
Depending on the set up, you're talking a really big trailer to carry both a car and a Harley. A Harley is not going to fit sideways in most enclosed trailers and even if it could fit, how would you get it in there sideways? Maybe a side door, but I doubt it. So you are likely talking putting the bike and car in it end to end. You need probably 9 feet for the Harley and probably at least 18 feet for most cars, plus some room for tie downs and being able to move inside the trailer. You're looking at probably a 30 to 32 foot trailer. Even if you get a V nose and put the bike up front, you still need 30 to 32 feet. They make them that big, but that's one big trailer.
