This spring we decided to buy a Ford F-150 4x4 which is flat towable and haul the trike in the truck when we wanted to take it. Had to buy long aluminum ramps to get the trike in the pickup but they work great. Just sayin'.
I see more and more people doing this. Flat tow a fullsize truck with something in the bed of the truck.
I will eventually be facing the same dilemma. There are hitch mounted racks that can accommodate a bike. But, you better have a large DP with rear axle capacity. I might want to tow a Jeep JK that is set up for off roading. Then the flat tow with the bike in the back would not be an option.
Having a large enclosed trailer to deal with everywhere I went would not be my first option. I tow a 23' toy hauler behind my 35' motorhome now. It is just too big. The only time I ventured into a campground looking for a dump, I side swiped a truck parked off the side of the road. Campgrounds are just not set up for 65' long vehicles. But, no problems towing to the desert. Plenty of room out there.
Good luck.
