transmission fluid ??

Just blew a line going to the transmission cooler. It is an easy fix but I'm not sure what type of fluid to top it off with.
It's a 1990 ford 460 I don't know what the transmission is.

Would there be a special type of fluid for that old of unit?

Only there is no "t" in Dexron. ;)

  • The dipstick itself will sometimes specify the fluid that should be used.

  • Take a look at the handle of the ATF dipstick. The correct fluid to use should be stamped there.
  • I would use type "F" always did when I had Fords-----they even use it in racing transmissions.
  • Mercon type transmission fluid, which Ford started using in 1987. Do not use the Mercon V which should not be used on pre-1997 Fords.
