Transmission Link Cable needed

1998 Itasca 32ft motorhome.

After several hours of diagnostics and a 20 mile tow behind a wrecker, it has been determined that the transmission link cable is seized solid. The cable has been removed, the transmission lever moves freely and the shift lever on the transmission moves. The cable will not move -- it is seized hard as a rock.

The service depot has tried various suppliers and there are no cables available - most say it is too old and not made anymore.

I have been sitting in the service depot for 2 nights now and want to get to my vacation destination ASAP.

Any suggestions for replacement, repair and build a new cable will be appreciated.

We are presently located in Ocala, FL.

If your eng ran hot or overheated the plastic housing shi is unto to inside cable wire. The replacement cable comes with an insulation on the outside to prevent this from happening again. The shop will want to go to workhorse to find the cable but tell them it is a P 30 chassis like on the many trucks that Chevy made. The vin would also be helpful.
  • Any boat shop, Auto parts also have them. Also as stated. Light oil and suck thru hose with vacuum.
  • Chaser,
You may want to Try this:
1)Remove the cable from the RV. (or at least the end in the cab)
2)Place a 2 or 3 ft. long hose over one end of the cable housing, and Clamp the hose securely.
3)Fill the hose with penetrating oil or transmission fluid.
4)Pressurize the hose with compressed air and try to move the cable while pressurized, repeat as required.
    Good luck.
  • Not sure if the chassis is a factor. The cable connects at the bottom of the steering post behind the front wheel and goes a round about way to the shift lever on the transmission. Approximately 6' in length with fittings on each end and a couple of mounting brackets on the cable sheath.

    Thanx
  • To verify the P chassis, it will have independent front suspension-- suspension looks like a larger version of a Chevy PU.
  • It is a Chev Chassis (?P30) with 454 CID engine.

West Palm beach is a long drive there and back.

    Thanx
