Another interesting thing about the ProMaster is the service guide. These vans don't need much in the way of maintaining other than an oil (and oil filter) change every 10k miles (4k miles if running extreme duty), and other minor service items do not start until 32k miles (if I recall right.)
I scratch my head about "American tastes" as well. In the UK, I can buy a Sprinter with four wheel drive. Same with a Transit. Same with a Ducato. However, here in the US where there is actual need for 4x4 ability, none of the van makers are bothering with it. If I want a 4x4 Euro van, I'll have to wait until the Transit comes out and when Sportsmobile or Quigley offer conversions.
I do understand about the gasoline engine. Even though the rest of the world has gone diesel for the most part, those types of vehicles still have a bad name in the US. This stems from the 1980s and the sluggish, smelly, polluting Mercedes turbo-diesels where people would pass those things on the breakdown lanes just so they could breathe air, not sulfur. Even though pickup trucks have been diesels for ages, the memory of those stinky sluggard vehicles is still there, when in reality, modern diesels produce cleaner exhaust than gassers.
