Trip from MA to Asseteague/Ocean City MD

We are leaving this coming week during the morning, meeting in New Haven and then we will be two rigs going down. They are staying on the mainland in MD and we are going down to Ocean City so we split at that point.

Used to do similar trips when son was in College - Before 9-11 when NYC just went impossible.

Tappan Zee bridge for sure.

Then I get off the NJT at exit 7 to I295 - gets you off the toll road early and saves the big line at the end. Have at times waited 45 minutes to pay the toll.

Then after DMB get off at the Christiana Exit 4-B to head south on RT 1 South toward the Beaches, then just past Dover RT 113 to the Beach, avoiding the Rehoboth Beach traffic, that can easily be two hours to go 5 miles.

Well, seeing that you're going to New Haven anyway, you might as well do I-95. Exit 56 is EAST of the I-95/I-91 interchange. I believe that truck stop is the T/A service plaza and it's not on an exit, but rather a service plaza on both sides. From New Haven, I'd do I-95 to I-287 to the Tappan Zee. Just be aware that they are building a new span and it may impact traffic.

From the Tappan Zee, you have a choice. you can go south on the Garden State Parkway and hook up with I-95 in Woodbridge or you can do the I-287 loop to get to the same place. Which way you go depends on day of week and time of day. I did the GSP on a Sunday afternoon and breezed right through.

From Woodbridge, go I-95 to I-195 to I-295 across the Delaware Memorial Bridge and take US13/Rt 1/US 113 down the delmarva. This is the route we took to Bethany Beach last fall and the route we're planning on to get to Assateague next month.

An alternate to the above would be to pick up (or continue on) the Garden State Parkway at the Woodbridge area all the way south to Cape May and then take the Cape May Lewes Ferry across the Delaware Bay then route 1 along the coast to Ocean City and on to Assateague. The ferry is a nice ride and the way we go when heading for Assateague, which we plan to do next week.

You mentioned going to Assateague in the entry line, something else there besides the wild horses is the NASA facility at Wallops Island.
They have a launch coming up on May 2 might be an interesting side trip for you.

Last winter's trip, we tried to be at Jetty Park Cape Canaveral to coincide with a "scheduled" launch. Of course, being Florida, you needed to make reservations months in advance.

They had a launch the week before we got there, and the first SpaceX launch with a successful booster return the week after we left.

Moral: Don't make campground plans based on when NASA says it will launch a rocket.

Jp; Its always iffy with those launches, but even if it doesnt happen, the facility is interesting. And while the Antares and other sub-orbital launches arent the same as some of the Canaveral launches, it can be an interesting visit.

Sorry, I just google earth'd the T/A at exit 56 and it's not the one I was thinking of. However, it is still east of I-91 so you'd have to backtrack if you took I-91 to I-95.

Lots of good ideas...always avoid the GW, and depending on your height, the southern portion of the Garden State is potentially a bad choice due to low bridges.

For us, over the Tappen Zee and down the Garden State Pkwy. Take Rte 80 back to 95/NJ Tpk.

THANKS for all the ideas. THE FERRY ??need reservation or is it something that runs roundtrip all day/ SOUTHERN PORTION OF GSP Where does it start that we may be too tall? WE are about NO taller than commercial trucks but not sure of exact height with A/C and covers for the vents(Maxairs). So after we meet up with friends at exit 56, she did say she would get us on 287 to Tappen Zee bridge and then down to avoid GW bridge.

Just came back from Ocean City, MD today. Our route, for what it is worth.
We took Route 95, not the NJTPK, but the Interstate. From where you are it is not as easy as it could be, but it is a Much less expensive route. It you are towing a car your Toll on the Delaware Memorial Bridge is $20, more if you have a tag axle. NJ Turnpike from Exit 9 to the end is $18.75. In Delaware you will get on Route 1, Delaware, NOT the US Rt 1. This is a toll route, but the tolls are worth it, as Rt13 is BRUTAL, lots of small towns and lights. Take this down to Route 50. You go nowhere near Baltimore.

If you can't get over to the PA side on the free bridge at Scudders Falls, you can still get off the NJTPK and get on 295, you will still have the Bridge Toll but you'll save some money.

Do know that Delaware raises their tolls on weekends and holidays.
