triview backup camera

We are planning to upgrade from a class C to a class A (used probably). Saw a new class A with a tri-view camera. When the turn signal is activated the camera switches from backup to either the right or left view mirror camera. This is a great safety feature when driving in traffic. I am wondering whether this feature can be retrofitted into an rv with just the standard backup camera and how costly this would be. Has anyone out there done this?
  • If mine were set up to allow choosing a camera when backing, I would find them much more useful. I would suggest when shopping for an add on system, check the features that it offers.
  • Everyone has different feelings about the usefullness of side cameras. I use mine when merging right in traffic and it works great for that. On my system the cameras are connected to the turn signal but I can also just select right, left or rear so I get a better view when backing or when needing a good view to the right or left without using my turn signal. Personally, I would pay extra for the option.
  • Yeah, what Don said. My MH came from the factory equipped with the 3 camera system. I find them pretty useless: image too dark at night, washed out with the sun behind you, difficult to judge distances of vehicles behind/ along side of you. I essentially ignore mine. I wouldn't take them off but I wouldn't pay to have them installed, either.

If you think you would like them, try to get a test drive in a MH that is equipped with them. I wouldn't let it be a deal killer if I were considering buying a MH without them.
  • Our new coach has the three camera system and I'm not a big fan for a few reasons. We typically tow a vehicle and I use the rear camera to see when my toad sufficiently passes the vehicle to my right before making a lane change. If I turn on my turn signal, which I like to do while making lane changes, you lose the ability to watch the toad and it's relationship to the vehicle your passing.

It may be just my cameras, but mine give a wide angle view which can be distracting when trying to determine if there is a vehicle and what lane it's in.

I also thought this system would work great while backing into a tight campsite. I would just turn on the turn signal on the side I wanted to see. Again, it may be my system, but in reverse, only the backup camera comes on and is not overridden by the turn signal. You need to go back to neutral to do so.

I almost upgraded my last coach to the three camera system because I thought it was a great feature. Now that I have it, I'm not a huge fan. I could live with or without it.

Just some thoughts for you to consider. If you could find a coach to test drive, you could see if you like the cameras or if they're distracting. I have the large Ramco mirrors where the lower third is a wide angle and they work great for monitoring side traffic.
  • We had to replace our old Sony backup monitor so we bought a new Voyager system. It worked with our old cameras and works great. It has the triggers for the turn signals so I hooked them up. It works, when you turn on the turn signal the monitor automatically turns on and shows the side camera that is the turn side. What a great safety item!
  • Voyager makes a great system and mine cost me around $600 for a complete 3 camera system with their 7" monitor. Hook-up was easy and I was able to use my existing back-up camera cable and running the two front side view cameras was easy. I love the system and it does provide a higher level of safety.
  • check out http://www.rvcams.com/default.htm

you would have to have a switching monitor with more than one input. You would have to check what you have for inputs and if it has a switching system. Some due and most don't.
