Truck Camper as towed?

Has anyone used a TC as a towed? I'm considering something like a four wheel TC on the F150 we tow. http://www.fourwh.com

For occasional side jaunts, such as last week we left the MH in place and hoteled it for four days as we were travelling some poor roads. Dirt roads in AK. I'm not a fan of hotels and would do more back road side trips if we had a convenient way to overnight away from the MH.

Weight police, please move along, nothing to see here.

Another option I've considered is a van conversion like the Sportsmobile. I think the TC would be more versatile.

Your thoughts?
  • Assuming you are going to ignore the limits & assuming there are two of you, you could compensate by towing it when conditions are relatively flat and when you come to significant hills, unhitch and drive them separately. That way you aren't stressing the drivetrain going up and down steep grades.

Doesn't address suspension and handling on level roads but at least it eliminates part of the issue with overloading.
  • Ductape, I would take your set-up to your home State DOT for a inspection, and get there advice to see if your unlawful. If you get there approval your good to go.

Your dealer says it's OK to tow more than 5000 pounds? Just modify the hitch? Now that's funny. At least they were smart enough to send you to a third party so they won't be liable for any future happenings. So the dealer knows more than Newmar.

Call Newmar and get their opinion!!!!

Your 2903 has a GVWR of 20,500 and a GCWR of 26,000 meaning you can't tow more than 5,500 pounds. Well, no one is stopping you. You might want to weigh your truck and camper and I'm sure you'll be way over gross.

OP stated for weight police to move along.......

OP has already 'justified' what he is doing and wants to do more w/o any facts getting in the way

So you and I need to move along..........
  • Funny you should ask.....

About three hours ago between Haines Junction and Kluane Lake on the AlCan I saw an older Prevost southbound pulling a 3/4 ton with about a 10 ft camper on it. Didn't have time to see if it was a 4X4 truck.

  • Thanks for your feedback. Stugpanzer, we invested in some upgrades to the hitch and chose a small coach on a heavy chassis to maximize the towing ability. We can handle the weight ok. The TC I'm thinking of is light. A HD truck and full size TC would be too much, although if I had a Prevost to tow with... not gonna happen.
  • You can find lot of pictures on this forum about a couple who travels to Mexico in 40' Diesel Pusher and pull about 25' ClassC for those roads where 40' is not recommended.
Smart people with lot of money.
  • Had I won the lotto or my Nigerian Prince proceeds finally come through, that is my dream config. A plush class-a towing a F550 or F650 Earth Roamer for exploring the rougher roads.

Sorry I don't have any constructive information for you, this is well outside my reach, except in my imagination :)
  • I am not the weight police but you will want to know what the truck and camper weigh together and of course what your tow capacity is of your coach. With that said I think its a great idea! I see you have a Newmar 2903 and I can only guess your tow limit is 5000lbs as is mine. I talked to my dealer about pulling something heavier than my tow limit for my coach and they said that my chassis (Workhorse W24) for sure can handle the extra weight and they suggested I take my coach to a reputable fab shop and beef-up the hitch to take the extra weight so that is something you may want to consider as well. The hitch is really the weak point as it is usually only rated for 5000lbs for gassers (yours might be different).

Good luck and be sure to come back and share what you come up with!
