Two Couches in DPs, Need Ideas for Replacing One

A lot of the DPs we have looked at have two couches. Even though they sleep 4 or 5 people they have seats for 8 or more and with just the two of us, we don't need the 2nd couch. Since I'm also a furniture maker, we're looking for ideas for something to replace the extra couch.

We've seen the desk and chair, credenza, and entertainment center, but wonder if there is something you've seen that would prove useful in that space. Please give us your ideas.
  • I have seen some nice desk/entertainment center conversions. They also use fold up shelf doors at middle end to act as table or more desk space. Key to the success is often a really nice chair that swivels and reclines.Saw one with two built in dog crates that served as benches with table in between and storage behind to act as backrest. Simple cushions to soften seating. Figure what you need and do it.
  • A swivel rocker and a desk would be my dream. I would love to take out the dinette and add a 16" deep credenza with storage and a fold up table with leaf with two freestanding chairs.

Be aware of anything that may be hiding under the couch you wish to replace; sometimes makers like to hide mechanical systems or outside storage compartments or whatever under couches, and you'll have to take any of that into account when figuring your replacement.

I like the way you think! BUT, I don't think that would fly. I have actually been contemplating a small 2'X 4' knock down bench that I could take with me along with a few hand woodworking tools--a rip saw, crosscut saw, dovetail saw, a few chisels, hand planes and some measuring and marking tools. I could either make legs for it or clamp it to a picnic table.

  • Here's what we did with ours. Needed a desk more than another chair/couch.
  • We have a 5th wheel now that offers two recliners facing the entertainment center. It's like being home.
