Sounds to me like vapor lock. Fuel pump is not normally intermittent. It is also very hard to turn over with vapor lock. Altitude can play a big factor in vapor lock.
DavidP, it acted like vapor lock but with my type of fuel injection the pump runs continuously with excess fuel constantly routed back to the gas tank. From what I understand, because of this design, EFI seldom ever develops vapor lock problems. In addition, if it were to vapor lock it would've done it climbing the long grade to Tejon Pass or the day before in +100 degree Phoenix AZ. When it happened engine conditions were literally ideal. I was running at a steady reasonable speed of 60mph on a boringly flat level roadway, about 400' above sea level, and it was no more than 80 degrees outside. Definitely, not your standard vapor lock conditions. That's why I don't suspect vapor lock at all, even though the symptoms point to that.

You are correct about EFI being far less likely to experience VL. I thought you had a carbureted engine.
