Bought ours with 22,000 miles on it and it has always overheated on long pulls. Also the fan clutch I put in was the Hayden severe duty.
scroller95969,
Does your actually overheat and boil the water? Mine gives no indication of overheating, just runs hot on the gauge. How hot does your actually get on the gauge?
No mine does not boil the water. The time I pushed it the temp was one mark below the top line. I didn't have the ultra gauge then so I don't know the exact heat that it was. It has run up to 235° quite a few times but normally stays below 230° and then I can hear the fan come on and it will stay between 210-225° if I baby it.
What engine do you have? The Hayden rep told me the severe duty fan runs at 75% of shaft speed from 180 to 200 degrees and 90% of shaft speed above 200 degrees. It sounds like yours isn't engaging until around 230 degrees of coolant temp. You may want to pull your rad and have it checked for blockage and while its out, flush the a/c condenser fins of bugs and debris real good.
I have the 6.0 engine. If the fan clutch is engaging below 220-225° I sure can't hear it and I can hear it plenty after that. If I push it hard it doesn't come on until around 230°. It seems to be engaging about like the stock clutch that I replaced it did. What the Hayden dealer told you makes me wonder if the temperature sending unit might be inaccurate. What temperature does yours run just going down the flat highway? Mine runs at 190-192°normally. By putting an infared heat gun on the radiator while running it didn't seem to have any hot or cold spots. Water came in hot and out cooler. I have considered just throwing a new radiator at it to see if it would fix it. I have already flushed out the condenser and radiator fins for bugs and debris.
I have also wondered if there could be a bad impeller on the water pump or perhaps a hose partially collapsing under load. All just guesses.
Mine runs between 195 and 200 degrees on everything but extreme hills. New rads are less than $200 (cheap) and water pumps are around $100 (cheap). I just hate guessing at problems, but our problem only happens under severe situations making it hard to diagnose.
