Onan generator problems.--Update Problem solved.

I have a an Onan 4000 series microquiet generator Model 4kyfa26100a in my coach.
while running generator today it developed a problem .From cold start generator will run fine under a load for about thirty minutes and then will start surging, not a major surge but more of slight up and down throttle.at this point the generator will start flooding and will finally quit.

it will immediately restart but when load it applied it will do same thing and then quit.

generator can sit for a couple of hours and restart fine and run about 30-45 minutes and problem start again. Also I've noticed that it seems to be getting extremely hot while this is happening.

Update:
After checking what I could I decided generator had to come out of coach.(thank god for motorcycle jacks)I lowered generator enough to remove cover. It seems a mouse family had taken up residence in my generator.
They had blocked air flow in fan area.I cleaned everything up and reinstalled generator and fired it up .The generator ran about five minutes and quit. After more troubleshooting I found that my fuel line from tank had rusted causing a couple of pin holes in the line.

I replaced the line and restared generator, after four hours run time I believe all is well.

  • Try the normal things first, New sparkplug, fuel filter and air filter. Be sure oil is proper 15-40 wt & clean. If no improvement, Remove Carb bowl. Check for water in bowl and clean. (Carb is non re-buildable). Try Carb Spray while running. Next disconnect fuel line and mix 1/2 can of Seafoam carb cleaner in 1 gal fuel and run directly into genset. If non of these things fix problems then new carb is next $$$$$. Keep us posted on outcome. Bill
  • Check the carburetor when it dies, it may be icing up from the high humidity.
  • Does the Microquiet have a spark arrestor screen in the exhaust? My 2800 Microlite acted sorta like that when the screen plugged up. Like to drove me nutso figuring out what the problem was until the light dawned.

  • Our 96 Southwind has a 5500 Onan generator.

Replacing the fuel filter solved my surging problem.

If your generator is overheating, obviously there's another problem.

Let us know what you did to get yours running properly, maybe someone else is having similar problems.
  • I would do three things: Take a look at the spark plugs to see if they indicate an issue, pull the carburetor and blow out the passages with some compressed air, and try a new fuel pump.

On edit: Also check the air intake to make sure there is no obstruction.
