Upper NE Wisconsin

Hello my fellow class A enthusiasts,

One of the greatest thing about just being on the road is the ability to simply go where the wind takes you. Well, the wind took us into the UP Michigan, and we are headed around to Wisconsin.

One of the things I would like to experience is seeing a real dairy operation - preferably an organic/non-GMO operation. Also, a cheese operation.

I googled it, and my head exploded! We would like to stay in the eastern half of the state. So I ask, does anyone have any recommendations as to where we might check out?

Thanks so much!

    I resemble that remark! :W

BTW: From a real cheesehead - Hennings IS THE BEST tasting cheese in Wisconsin. I'd go there and scarf up all the samples you can!
  • Depends on whether you want to see a huge operation or a smaller one. We found smaller is better. We've gone through the Tillamook factory in Oregon and last year in Wisconsin we went through Hennings. Smaller is more intimate and you'll get to talk to the 'real' people not simply looking through the glass windows...JMHO......Dennis

If you're coming down I-39/51 through Wausau there is a Mullins Cheese Factory about 10 miles south at Knowlton/ Lake Dubay with both a private CG, Lake Dubay Shores, and a public CG through Portage County within a very few miles....all on the edge of Lake Dubay.

    Thanks so much!!

As a dairy farmer from Wisconsin, you probably don't want to see some of the organic operations. A lot of of those operations are pretty rough. Before forming your opinion I suggest you visit a well run conventional dairy farm and see with your own eyes how well the animals are cared for and how clean they are.

I would like to see both, then. Any ideas on where to go?

  • Here is one we have been to in Door County near Sturgeon Bay. clicky. It has lots of activities and a tour and viewing area in the milk parlor. Also a country store on the premises. There are lots of others, and lots of other things to see in Door County while your there.

Near Wisconsin Dells, there is Carr Valley Cheese where you can view them actually making the cheese and how they go about it.

Good luck and enjoy. Hope this may help, Happy Trails Bert
