Dennis, I used to live in Boise and happened to traverse hwy 12 once from Lewiston, ID to Lolo, MT. This well paved, possible narrow road was the most exciting piece of road I have ever been on. For maybe a hundred miles the only thing different about the forest now and a thousand years ago is the hwy. I am talking "wild". Like many roads in Idaho, this one follows a river for much of its length with lots of places to pull off and spend the night. For a great distance there are no stores, no houses, nothing but wild. If this appeals to you, ask around. I did it in a truck camper 15 years ago.
