All,
Thinking (dreaming) of buying our first RV. Not looking at new models... they depreciate too quickly. I see 10-12 year old used models priced from $12- $20K and 4-6 yr old units priced from $30K and up. I'm somewhat handy and can fix things. How long do the major appliances (water heater, fridge, furnace, A/C units, propane systems, water pumps , battery charger, inverter, etc) last? Is it a mistake to consider a 12+ yr old "C" for $10000 or so? Thanks.
From your post it looks like you have never been in an RV to know how the appliances work? Did any of your folks have one? You need to understand how each system works before you can fix it. Buying a book on RV maintenance and reading through it should give you the knowledge you need to see if you could handle repairs. Get a book now. A very cheap way to save getting stuck with a bottomless money pit. Used RV's are sold "AS IS". You are stuck with any expenses required to get it in usable order.
If you are serious about getting one you would need to check out all systems in anyone you were really interested in purchasing. That means turning each one on to confirm that they are working. Getting up on the roof to check it out. Looking for signs of leaks inside the unit.
The previous owner should have records showing required service and any repairs done. Initially you may be needing new tires and batteries unless records show items replaced recently. Check tire manufacture dates on the tires and same for the batteries. Tires may show good tread since RVs don't get much mileage each year, but should be replaced every seven years from aging.
If the previous owner (or Dealer) has no records, leave and check elsewhere.
