We had a 1996 RT190P with the Dodge 318. It performed flawlessly for us for many years. We sold it to friends in another state and they kept it for years and I don't think ever touched the engine. Only poor health caused them to sell it a few years ago. That engine is bullet proof. Also, I loved the big swinging door on the back of the old Dodge vans. Now, they say it warps the door if you have single door. I never, ever experienced a leak of any kind and found the rear door much handier than the arrangement on our Chevy 210P. On the Chevy, you have to lower the continental kit to open the drivers side rear half of the door. I always hear about handling problems with old Dodges and I had two of them on Bs and loved them. The Chevy was great also. The old Ford, Chevy and Dodge one ton vans (as we called them once upon a time) were real workhorses. Also, we got good mileage on the 318 and found it adequately powered a 190. The only exception was on extreme mountain passes in the Rockies and it chugged a bit, but that is what lower gears are for in my opinion. How many times in your usage life time will you cross 10,000+ foot passes? All you gotta do is slow down a bit and enjoy the scenery.
Two Dodge 318 Bs.....nary a problem. One Chevy 6.0 B.....nary a problem.
When I look at new Roadtreks now and consider the changes in the company, I think I prefer the build quality of the older units. The newer units, however, are well built and have many, many improvements and modernizations. We loved our Roadtreks and probably will buy another one in a few years when we tour more and camp less for weeks at a time.
