Using a 2014 GMC Sierra in dinghy towing

We just purchased a 2014 GMC and are having the tow system installed. We were told by the dealer that the process was identical to our 2011. WRONG. Never had to unhook the negative terminal from the battery and now we do. Question is, how can the Brake Buddy function with no power from the battery?

  • We tow a 2014 Silverado. We use an aux. 12 volt outlet that clamps on to the battery. We ran a line from that down under the truck and came up under the passenger floor mat, if you lift the carpet there is a rubber plug that can be removed to run the wire up through. Only problem we have is we always forget to adjust the driver seat position to fit the brake buddy before we unhook the 12v terminal..
  • A 2015 needs the neg. post disconnected. But if the OP wants a professional answer to his question look in the owners manual.

  • I hope that you are getting the current information that you must pull a fuse from the book that came with the truck. I tow a 2012 and have been looking at 2014 and 2015 and did not know this . I also ran across a 2015 owner who just bought his truck to tow and said the book said he could tow it if the transfer case was in neutral, but he thought he could not get it into neutral because he did not see "N" on the dial used to electronically shift it. (He did not realize that the "N" is not visible until it is shifted. Anyway I did not know and am surprised that a fuse must be pulled to tow it.
  • Use an aux cig lighter with two alligator clips to power the braking system. Just clamp onto the battery when you disconnect the main cable. Of course, you want an inline fuse on that setup for protection.
  • Or you could get a battery jump start box with a cigarette lighter input.
  • take the 12v from the Rv threw the trailer connector. Which connector do you have on the RV,
