Using a scooter out of state...

On the back of my RV i have a rack that i carry a scooter for trips out of the campground. In my state, there are no requirements for tags or registration on scooters smaller than 49cc. I notice that next year Virginia will require tags on them, and after some reading i now think Florida requires them too. Since these are 2 places i will visit next year, i'm wondering how i can possibly use the scooter? I't not like i can just go to my local MVA and get them as they don't offer them. Does anybody have any input?
  • Most states use the home states law (honors them). I'd just ride it like you always would. Chances are nobody will care anyway. If they do, (if you are really worried) print out that section of the DMV law of your home state and keep it in your wallet (or in scooter's storage)
  • Fla. Law may have changed recently, but when I had one, no yearly (or fee) tag needed. However, you could voluntarily get a Fla tag, that said "permanent" for a very small fee. Maybe your State has something like that?
  • Best bet just go get it registered, it will save you a lot of time and stress in the later on, But seeing how the state dose not offer them, you might be fine.
  • License, registration and insurance requirements are covered under the reciprocity compact. Just carry a copy of your "home" state DMV regs and you are good to go. Some states( TN comes to mind) do not require tags on trailers and as long as you can provide an officer with the state regulation, you are good in any state you travel in.
