vehicle speed sensor- cat C7-allison trans combo

Got a funmover 39c on an f750 cat c7 chassis with a speedometer going wacko....one second at 0, then 90, bouncing around. Would be easier to service if the engine wasn't cutting out thinking its over speeding when the needle bounces to 90-100 mph . Worried it may die before I can get it to a shop. Would like to fix at home. I understand the sensor ties into the Allison somewhere, but where? Do they just come loose as well?

For frame of reference my truck is front engine.

Thanks,

Cb

  • Thought I'd close this out. Had a round tuit, so I replaced the vehicle speed sensor. Easy to find. ..in transmission, md3066. Not so simple to find in town. Took a while to track down. Runs like a money eating champ I've had for 9 yrs!

  • Hadn't hit limp mode yet, but it does shut down injection momentarily. Shifting is fine. I will look for that plug tomorrow. I understand from seeing documents there are two engine sensors, one crank, one can, but the trans is the one to feed info to the ecu and dash. Can't drive it to the dealer like this yet..
  • FYI

Our Phaeton C-7/Allison went into "limp mode" and wouldn't shift out of second gear. Bad speed sensor harness plug on the Allison transmission tail shaft. Pushing in harness plug got it working long enough to drive it to the Allison Service Center in Fort Wayne IN. They replaced the plug in about 15 minutes and got us back on the road.
  • There is probably an encoder (speed sensor) located on the output shaft of the Allison.
The engine sensor I mentioned previously would run the tach.

  • The engine speed signals comes from a sensor located on the engine. The speedometer signal to the dash is driven from the electronic control unit(CAT).

If it is jumping around, you may have a bad sensor or connection. For the record there is a primary and secondary sensor.
