Yea, I have started a small fire in the garage welding, LOL.. That slag is bloody hot. I have seen people weld around (not on) closed gas tanks but, yea, it does seem like a risky thing to do. I don't really know how else to secure a panel back from where it was removed though. Welding is quick and easy.
