Preventive Maintenance

When do you think it is appropriate time to change out radiator hoses, heater hoses and other 'perishable' things under the hood. My coach will be 5 years old next year ('15), and sure would like to head off a problem if I can. Coach has 27k and all regular maintenance is up to date. Am I being too overly cautious?????

  • To me it seems that hoses can last 20 years or more. My 94 that I just gave to the granddaughter still has OEM hoses, radiator, and pump.

I did change the antifreeze every few years though. If you're going to spend time and money, this is where I would invest in.
  • The manual for my 2005 Ford V10 says that if the engine cooling system happens to run out of coolant, the engine is safe to be run at a slower speed but can continue to operate with no damage. It does this by alternating the firing of the cylinders. Just saying this as food for thought.

Normally, I'd check the hoses by squeezing them to see if they appear soft and weak or I pressurize the coolant system and look for bulging hoses or leaks. The belts, look for cracking and chunks of material that is missing. If all looks good but you're still worried, buy all new hoses and belts and bring them with you.
  • Some belts and especially hoses in modern vehicles will last the life of the rig, or longer
  • 2004 excursion, I changed the belt when the alt went bad at about 150,000. It has 170,??? now and the hoses look good.
  • Thanks for the reply...I do have a tendency to be overly 'preventive'. I will definitely be waiting a while.
  • Just did mine (F150) at 12 years 180,000
Although I will put the second belt on at 200,000

Check the upper hose for soft spots but I would run it a bit longer.
