The force imposed on the system once the vehicle is in motion is not that great to shear bolts and plates off in a linear fashion. How long had they been travelling? I am thinking there was drag on the system. Maybe the supplemental brakes came on applying drag??? Could they have hit a pothole, bump, curb etc applying lateral shear force? I just don't see what you explain, happening just going down the road.
