I might be in the minority, but Yellowstone is huge and in July it might be crowded. For these reasons and also because even in their worst campground it is beatiful, I would stay inside the park. From West Yellowstone it could take you a half hour to an hour just to get to the loop roads. We stood in Canyon campground for a week because it was close to the middle of the loops roads and made it easier to travel the park, but I did read on this site that some one stood at different campgrounds in the park so that they could explore each area which sounded like a great idea.
