At this time, because the van needs to be DOT/EPA certified, and to cover the cost of that VW would have to import it and try to sell it here. VW did so with the previous generation, but could not sell enough to make money against the cost of supporting it.
The VW camper van last hit our shores in the T4 generation. It was the Westfalia conversion (before Daimler bought Westfalia) and was sold through and serviced by Winnebago, who was building Rialtas and conventional C's (Winnebago Vista, Itasca Sunstar) on the T4 platform.
Importation ended when the T4 was replaced by the T5 on the global market.
