W22 or W24 chassis

We're looking at upgrading to a newer used Class A gasser.

Is there an easy way to tell whether a particular MH is on a Workhorse 22 or 24 chassis? Something in VIN or easy to look at on MH?

Thanks-- Mick

Yep, that is the way mine is.

Yup, my 04 W20 has dual pipes, cats, and mufflers all the way back to a behind the drive wheels side exit. I think all WH chassis of that vintage were plumbed pretty much the same.

  • You can also check the placard by the drivers seat. The W22 has a GVWR of 22,000 pounds. The W24 has a GVWR of 24,000 pounds.

Sounds like you have your answer and I'd go for the heavier W24 if it was me. Also the W24 was never involved in the infamous brake recall and have different brand calipers. The 8.1 engine, coupled with the 6 speed Allison transmission is quite a combo and will pull most anything anywhere with no ill effects.

The 6th digit in the Vin # will identify the chassis. If it's a "6" it will be a W22. If it's the letter "A" it will be a W24. The length of the coach has nothing to do with the chassis it's on. Ours is almost 38' and it's on a W22. Good Luck and hope you find the coach that works best for you.

    Yep...this is the answer!

We traded our 2004 Damon intruder that was on a W22 chassis for our 2006 Fleetwood Pace Arrow that is on a W24 chassis. Both have 22.5" tires.

  • Mick, IMHO, a Workhorse W-22 Chassis comes with coaches 36' in length or less and Workhorse W-24 Chassis comes with coaches 37' in length or more.
  • Look for 22.5" rims?

The heavier chassis should have larger tires. Not sure about it though. The Vehicle MUST have a GVWR posted on each vehicle.

Not sure that you can buy a new GMC chassis motorhome anymore. Don't give up on a new RV, the new RV dealers have a lot of flexibility in their pricing plans, and can give 30% discounts from retail prices.

    Good luck!
