Wall Cracks in Slide Opening

Looking at motor homes in the 1998-2004 range, I've seen quite a few with cracks in this corner on the bedroom slide. Some are small and some have been quite large. Is this a common failure point. I don't see as many cracks in the main slide because this corner normally falls on a seam or in this case just above the cargo doors.

  • We have a 2002 Fleetwood Bounder 39r. It seems that this is a common problem. It does not interfere with the functionality of the RV or the slide, it is just poor engineering by the manufacturers.
  • I had a small crack about 1.5 inches on my rear slide corner. Had it repaired at an RV paint shop. $50.00 Exact same spot as yours!
  • I had a 2001 journey with a crack in the exact same location. Occurred during the warranty period. Winnebago picked up my coach, took it back to Forrest city and replaced the entire side. I'd did not reoccur.
  • Seems to be a common problem on bedroom slides, probably from the location of the slide in regards to frame twisting while leveling. I had a hair line crack in same spot, which I corrected by drilling a small hole at the end of the crack. Then painted a piece of flat 1.5 inch aluminium to match RV. Attached it by bonding it to the fiberglass under the slide opening, running the length of the slide with it extending pass each end, approximately two incbes. This covers the initial crack while adding support. After completed one couldn't tell that it wasn't done at the factory when built, just another piece of trim.
  • It's a common problem on any RV with a rectangular hole cut into a solid fiberglass skin - it's a stress crack from the fiberglass flexing at the corner of the hole. The solution is to remove the 90 degree angle at the corner - either make it a radius corner, or make it a joint and cover it with some molding.
