I think everyone can live on a lot less than we currently are. Just a matter of what you are willing to give up. Many things that people think are "necessities" today aren't really necessary. :R

He's young and living a chosen lifestyle. I think under the same circumstances I could live on $800 a month.
Especially if you have a bunch of money available if you really need it. We don't know all the facts about him or his lifestyle.

I suppose there's a back story to this someplace?

He set up with his financial advisers to give him an $800/month allowance. Apparently he felt this was enough. He's a young guy that doesn't watch TV, doesn't drink alcohol, probably eats some meals at the training camp each day, and drives a vehicle that doesn't use much gas.
I'm sure that he could ask for more if the need arises. He says he is a minimalist and feels that he doesn't need a lot of things that many of us feel are necessary.
