The shorter diesel seems to drive every bit as nicely as the 40 footer. It is about the same off the dime, but it definitely is slower on the hills. We haven't had it in the mountains though yet. I don't mind the slower hill climbing, it looks like the mileage is going to go from 7.2 on the 40 footer to 9.5 - 10 mpg on the newer one. Don't have a lot of data on the newer one, although it is definitely higher than the previous one.
I do believe that the new shorter one is affected a little more by passing trucks, and probably heavy cross winds but my comfort level at the wheel doesn't seem to be much worse on the new one. Still too early to give a firm positive answer though. So far though, we are thrilled with it. IT definitely is more maneuverable though being 6-7 feet shorter and having a 7 degree sharper cut angle on the front wheels.
