"Why would a company plumb a washer to drain into black tank?"
Because the floorplan of the RV prevented the Washer plumbing from going to the Gray tank. There is NO rule or Code that states ONLY Black Water must go to the Black tank. The probable reason the Check valve blew up, is because when the washer drained the Black tank which was already pretty full, then was completely full and the only relief from the pressure was that tank valve and then the toilet seal.
