Water Pump quit, then started ??

Was taking a shower this morning and the water pump quit working. Luckily I was finished and just getting ready to shut off the water. I turned the pump switch off and waited a few minutes, then turned it back on and the water flowed. What do you think? Is it getting ready to fail? Should I buy a new one and keep it on hand, just in case? Thanks
Brian
  • Possibly internal thermal protection, resets when cool. How long was that pump running?
  • All older DC pumps have brushes, they may be worn down. Some are replaceable some are not.

    I don't really know, maybe 5 minutes.
  • Spare parts are super if you think you might need them down the road. , it takes away a lot of worry.
  • The Water Pumps all have a Thermal cut out. But, in your case, it indicates the motor is old and worn. Replace the pump. Doug
  • I just replaced my water pump; it was in its tenth season. You will probably do the same thing.

But, to cover all bases, you might check the wiring to the pump for a loose connection. Mine, being in the storage area under the sink, has had its wiring come loose on more than one occasion. My moving things around under the sink has caused the problem.

After installing the new pump, I placed a piece of thin plywood over the water pump wiring to help protect it.
  • Just for grins and giggles, check you "city water hookup" for signs of leakage. We were having erratic operation of our water pump, and I noticed water was dripping from the city hookup. Turned out, the check valve had the "O" ring come off of the valve, and would seal intermittently. Some times, the pump would not turn on and no water flow, sometimes it would run and run with little flow, other times would be normal. Sometimes a short burst of the pump running would happen. We have a house water filter on the city hookup, so it kind of acted like an expansion chamber. Was very happy to find the check valve problem. Just changing the pump would not have been much of a problem, but it was not the problem.
