We backed out of the deal

Maybe I don't understand what you mean by firring strips but the question remains how did you know there was water damage, the extent of the damage, and that it was and not repaired properly?

The owner was obviously "very trusting" and went out of his way to deliver the MH to your driveway without payment or anything in writing for that matter (assuming given your point about you having plans to pay in the morning). Was there any deposit? It's your decision to back-out of the deal but as the owner I would expect to keep any deposit to cover the costs of delivery and pickup.
