I think both parties are at fault. Buying an RV is no different then anything else. Do you have clear title, does it have a clean title, has it been in any wrecks, do you know of any mechanical problems, is there any other issues you know of? These are all the most basic questions prior to even looking at something.
I'm betting that this rig was priced to move, that is how every con works. Make the person think they are getting something for nothing and let their greed cloud their judgment.
None of us know how we would have behaved (my word is my bond) until we were in that situation (talk is cheap) but I for one know I would not have gotten into that situation in the first place.
Yes due diligence is something we all have to do to get ahead in life. It doesn't matter if it's a house, car, spouse, job acceptance, education, vacation home, or in this case an RV.
As I jokingly tell the kids/grand kids "Make good choices."

Thinking about it even more and if the rig was parked so close to a building that you couldn't even see the side, then that kinda implies the OP didn't even take it out for a test drive. That's an assumption I know, but it does add up.
