As several have said, the problem is not just signal strength (though that sure can be) but it is most often the available bandwidth. If you can get by with the bandwidth available, look for a USB add-on made by Alfa. Mine is an AWUS036NHR, but there may be a newer number out there. With the big antenna, if there is an open access point (in the county - almost), I can usually work it. This is the second Alfa I have had. SIL borrowed the first and I have not seen it again.
The real answer is to either get a Cell/Wifi deal (shop as these have an extremely wide cost range or tether from a smart phone(I tether from my Droid). You have to be ready to deal with no or bad coverage, so be sure you find out what network you will be on and if it has coverage where you will be.
