Do yourself a very big favor. Go to walmart and buy their 3g wifi hotspot for $79.00 bucks. Buy data cards when and for the amount of data you need. No service contracts, so if you are not a full timer you can just use it when you need it. You will be on the verizon network exclusively so you will have the best coverage available. Data is $40.00 for 4 G with a 2 month window to use it...or you can buy as little as 1 G or up to 7 G.
If you want more speed, they also have a no contract 4 G modem hotspot for $99.00 and data that is a bit pricier...but still no contract.
Add something like Hopspot shield to create a VPN for yourself and you will have a very nice private and secure setup with no contract.
Public wifi is horrible just about everywhere.
