Weird shrinking vinyl nail trim problem

Spent a most pleasant day working on the RV. Nothing like retirement!
This is the first winter in years that the RV has been in cold weather. (Colorado vs. Arizona)
I noticed the corner nail trim molding is sagging in both cabover corners. I didn't take a pic, but here is the location.

I thought it was no big deal, just stretch and reattach, but it keeps popping back out? Do I have to replace the whole strip? Does this vinyl molding "shrink" after exposure to cold weather?
  • I ordered new strip and eternabond for the edge. I did the back with eternabond and although it is not attractive, I think it is protecting the corners from water intrusion. So I'll go ahead and do the front edges too, then replace the metal strip with new screws and new vinyl.
    Thanks for the answers/ideas.
I didn't pull the strip in when I replaced it in the back. I pinched it in all along the metal edging. I think it would be difficult to pull into old metal, too many bumps etc.
  • When they install the vinyl strip they pull it in from one end. This stretches the vinyl. Later it shrinks. New strip is the best cure but let it set for a while after putting it in. Car and truck door weatherstrip does the same thing especiallly on older GM pickups.
  • I glued mine in with Amazing Goop. Had to do it a couple of time before it stayed in place. On one side I cut the bottom end off, where it is screwed in place and slid the trim up to reduce the stress.
  • Just an RV maintenance thing then. Thanks for letting me know. The poor thing is starting to look old. (Like some of us?) and I'm considering taking off all the cracked graphics too. It is a testament to the original quality that it is still so functional for us. Of course it is only a bit over a decade old. Our cars are older! :)
  • We have bought rolls of the insert stuff over the years until we bought our current motor home which doesn't use any. Over time the trim insert fails one of three ways; 1) it dis-colors, 2) it shrinks, or 3) it cracks. You can buy the vinyl insert online or at RV dealers and Camping World in black, white or cream, it's rather inexpensive for what it does, help keep water out of your RV.
  • I've had it do that on most RVs I've had. I just purchase a new strip at CW and put it in. I've not had much success with trying to reinsert the old stuff.

Me too. I got some small stainless screws and tagged it into the aluminum in a couple places so it lost the radius that was pulling out.
  • I had that happen over the winter, in one place on my TT that stuff shrunk to the point I can now see a screw under it. Weird thing to happen after ten years of ownership.
