You should be able to see "metal on metal" or "rubbing a quarter inch groove into the hanger".

Bring someone with you who is somewhat mechanical and ask the shop to show you and your friend this metal on metal rubbing. You should see bright shiny metal where everything else is either greasy or dirty or painted black.
