This "ball and socket type joint with a pin/bolt through it" that you're describing is most likely ball joints. At 13 years old, it would not be uncommon for them to need to be replaced. If severely worn, they could produce a popping or sometime clunking sound. It may also be tie-rod ends.
In this case, I strongly agree with time_to_go_now who suggested that you take someone along with you who is more mechanically inclined and who clearly understands what the facility is diagnosing and recommending. I don't recommend that you give them anymore money until you get someone you know and trust to intervene on your behalf with the knowledge to confirm whether or not the work being recommended is all correct and necessary. It night even be worth paying someone a few bucks for their time to do so.
