Ken, if you haven't already, I'd suggest you start off by visiting Mt. Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota, following that up with a visit to Devil's Tower in NE Wyoming nearby. Continue to Yellowstone NP, then down to adjoining Grand Teton NP. You will be close enough to do the Grand Circle of NPs in Southern Utah, but be advised that it will soon be exceedingly hot there (no kidding), so check the extended forecast before deciding whether to do that or not. You could always head North instead, to Glacier NP, and even North Cascades NP in Washington. If time is still available, you could add in Olympic NP in NW Washington.

That sounds like a pretty ambitious schedule there for the allotted time. These are just favorites of mine since I live in this part of the country. Others have their own personal favorites, so keep an open mind. Above all, take your time, be safe, and enjoy the trip. Oh, even at this time, finding available campsites in the NPs is going to be difficult, so plan on alternatives!

I'd be looking for higher elevation since I find no reason to be sweating and trying to run the AC. We boondock so it's easier to heat than to cool. Badlands, Black Hills, Palo Duro, Valley of fire in Carrizozo, Yellowstone, Glacier, Ouray, Grand Canyon of the Gunnison, Telluride, Moab, Canyonlands, la Sal mountains, Arches, Goblin valley, Capital Reef, Lake Itasca headwaters of the Mississippi.......

Next time I'm on 80 I'm going to hit Iowa 80 truck stop, largest in the world. :)

I LOVE IT! Now that's the way to travel; leaving in two days and no idea where you're going!! Have you ever thought of full-time RVing? You'd be a perfect candidate.

Just get to the first state that looks interesting to you and start exploring. Have a ball!! Report back to let us know where you ended up.

You could head west on 80 to Salt Lake City. There is a nice KOA there where you could stay a day or two and decide which way you want to go from there.

Lot's of options.

We've done what you are doing, just headed in a general direction and followed our nose.

You're not from Salt Lick Kentucky are you? Interesting place...........

Sounds Great!

Get to Hannibal and take RT 36 to Golden, Good spot to start.

With only a Month you will need to schedule your time, as the West is BIG.

Search on this site the names of places you might want to see.

The weekends will be key as most places will be reserved that are popular.

Out west schools let out on Memorial Day so things get Busy.

Hope this helps - catch a little Utah - then go North to Yellowstone to head Home, the Rockies are the place to be.

Yes it will be hot and yes it will be crowded but the things you will see are awesome. And I promise you when you get home you will say we missed something. I have been 3 times from Va. once clockwise once counter clockwise and once through the middle. I would suggest you pick an area say northern route and see that area, Wall drug, Mitchel corn palace, Devils tower, Sturges, Deadwood, Yellowstone well you get the idea. Even with a month you will be pushing it.
