When our mirror portion broke in Canada, we just had a piece of standard mirror glass cut that I temporarily glued in until we got home. Much simpler

We did that a year and a half ago. The original mirror shattered but remained attached to the backing plate. Duct tape held it all in place--and I could even use the mirror, more or less, for the rest of the drive to Zihuatanejo where I glued a new mirror over it.
That story and this is on our here, with photos
This time it was that "temporary" repair which failed grazing a gravel truck mirror last month taking the mirror mounting plate with it and now the only thing to glue a mirror to is that white plastic ring in the photo. Not sure how well the glue would hold, AND be able to remove to put the right parts back on. Gluing to the outer housing won't work as it would be aimed too high.
Good news, Valvac is shipping the new mirror glass at no charge, should be here in a week or so.
And that blog link reminds me that I better get off my butt and get the blog up to date!
