To each his own on whether to use Safelite or do it yourself. It DOES however go on your record. Your current company may not raise your rates for one or two, but they do take those claims into consideration. I was shopping for rates and received a quote back from another insurance company. In the detailed quote, they included what they used to influence the pricing. It listed the claims for windshields. I had a claim for a full replacement and I had a claim for a repair. Don't think for one minute that the insurance companies aren't paying close attention on how much money they have to fork out for claims.
As for how good the do it yourself kits work....I have four repairs on a windshield that is two years old. I spent a total of $40 on repair kits to fix them. You can hardly see the repairs at all and they are still holding up. If I would have had safelite come out to fix them, I would be looking at $75 to $100 each time. I could have paid for a new windshield. If I was to claim all of them on my insurance, they would probably be looking at dropping me by now. I have a spare unused kit at home in case I have to fix another chip. Until those repairs fail me, I will keep using them and not have an insurance record a mile long.
