FireUP, other than 5 cylinders on high (it's all 6) a good explanation. Part of the confusion is that Jacobs makes an exhaust brake and most MHs have exhaust brakes, not true Jake compression brakes.
There is no way to close the exhaust valve on the exhaust stroke as the cam and lifters are holding it open. Yes you could have an electron lifter that collapses, but I do not know of any big diesel engine which have those.
The noise issue is because of trucks that do not have any mufflers and the expelled compress air can be quite load. I'll use my Jake on low (3 cylinders) when there are signs posting that it's use is prohibited. Granted if there was a police car visible I would not push my luck.
