So, here's a "cut to the chase approach", a "Reader's Digest Condensed Version" (LOL)....from the horse's mouth so to speak...;).. -

When activated, the Jacobs Engine Brake opens the exhaust valves near the top of the compression stroke, releasing the highly compressed air through the exhaust system.
