What is this Solar Charge For?

On our new (to us) 2006 Fleetwood Pace Arrow, there is an indicator on one of the AC units that says "Solar Monitor - Light on only when battery is accepting charge". There is a small solar panel on the AC unit. Can anybody tell me if this is related only to the AC unit or is this a trickle charge solar setup for the house/coach batteries? I am still going through all the manuals and have not found anything on this yet!

Thanks!

  • It's so small I first thought it was an auxiliary charger for a cell phone. Maybe with an outlet on the dash.

But with the 'battery accepting charge' notice, maybe it is a charger for your Chassis battery...at least all those I'm familiar with charge the chassis batt because often, the manufacturer doesn't add an auxiliary charger for it. It's mostly charged by the alternator.

Mine covers nearly the entire top of the AC, and it's only 8 Watt. Useless.

Yes, but for engine or house battery?
  • If parked in direct sunlight, the red light will come on to show it is charging the battery. Hmmm, my panel is larger than the one you show....I thought it charged the house batteries...not the engine battery....don't know, but the light doesn't come on anymore....
  • Mine had that also. It was a joke. Not big enough to do anything if it worked. Mine never did.
  • We do not have solar panels of right now, but my Brother does as he lives on a two story house boat. And that is one small panel, not sure of the charge that would supply.
  • It is a battery trickle charger and judging by its size is more marketing than useful . Very low input . Probably to the coach batteries .
  • I can't imagine that it has anything to do with the A/C. I would guess that the panel is just using the shroud as a mount. It is probably trickle charging your house batts.

It even indicates: "Light on only with battery is accepting charge."
